No, I have never advocated for school to close because of Covid-19. Keeping schools open in a safe manner is the best possible solution for our children.
In terms of virtual school as a long-term alternative solution to in-person school, I much prefer that schools are open and have never advocated for school closures due to Covid-19. I know that virtual school was tough for my boys and for me as a working parent. I know they(we all) do so much better with in-person learning.
However, in the future, and if proper funding can be secured, I think being able to offer virtual learning options for students who are dealing with long-term medical issues or disabilities that can make in person learning extremely difficult is a way that we could support these families in our community.
There is no doubt that our current board has had oversight during a very difficult time. However, I believe that for the better of our community and our children’s education we need to move past this divisive issue.
Now that we have other methods of reducing the spread of infection, we can rely less on masks and more on vaccines and treatments. Regardless of the infections we may face in the future, whether it be Covid-19, the flu or lice, it is important to execute best practices and listen to medical professionals when it comes to mitigating the spread of infection.
I believe this is another divisive issue that takes our eye off the ball of providing top quality public education. Let’s focus on our common ground. I hope that we can all agree that as people we learn from our past experiences. We use our successes, challenges and failures to help us make better decisions and hopefully not repeat our mistakes. Just as in our own lives we must also do that with our own history. We should use history as our guide to help us learn from our successes and our failures. So I believe we should teach the wide ranging history, the good and bad, that we have experienced as a nation and world. This does not mean that we should ever make anyone feel shame or ridicule for what our history tells us. It’s an opportunity to learn from those that came before us and to do better. “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Winston Churchill
